In 1897, a small hospital
was setup in Amherst Street by the Government for the treatment of
diseases like Malaria, Kala Azar and other contagious diseases which
frequently plagued Kolkata Police personnel.
Subsequently in 1921, the Kolkata Police Hospital moved to its present location
in Bhawanipur. Presently the hospital staff comprise of 35 doctors, 62 trained
nurses and 128 medical support staff. Primarily the hospital provides in-patient,
out-patient, and diagnostic services to personnel of Kolkata Police, West Bengal
Police, Home Guards, and the Fire Brigade.
All the departments in this 300-bed hospital including Radiology, Pathology,
Physiotherapy, and Ultrasonography are well equipped with state-of-the-art machines
and medical equipment. Other facilities available include a modern Operation
Theatre and a Pharmacy which stores various life saving drugs along with general
medicine.
